Should I have sex to induce labor?

I will be 37 weeks on Friday.I lost my mucus plug and I am dilated 2cm.Doctor told me on monday to walk to help induce labor. My fiance' has to go back to work in a few days and won't be able to come home if I go into labor.Should I have sex to help induce labor or will it harm the baby?

The Answer by JUDAS RAGE :
It wont harm the baby but I dont think it will make you go into labor either. personally i think its a man made concept. Try to self induce by simulating breast feeding. It sends a hormone into your body that helps your uterus shrink back down after pregnancy. When you simulate breastfeeding you do have to be ruff with the nipple in order for your body to start to push the production of the hormone. It will give you almost instant contractions if you are in a bare down position. good luck.

As long as you did not have surgery to have a cervical cerclage put it to prevent pre-term labor, you are good to go. Have sex, take walks and eat some spicy food. Something will do it!

Definitely! It worked for me! Have sex A LOT! As long as your water hasn't broken it's safe. The sex makes your uterus contract. But, At 37 weeks I had also lost my plug and was 2 cm dilated, and I didn't have my daughter until week 40 when she was due, so you could have a while to go. If the baby's not ready to come, the sex won't do anything, but if she's ready it can help to speed things up. Godd luck!

Sex won't hurt the baby, but there is no guarantee that it will induce labor. It's one of those situations where it works for some woman, not for others. I've known several women who tried that method, and it worked for only 2-3 of them. Another method to try to 'self-induce' is a professional massage. There are certain trigger points that can bring on labor. But again, only some of the women will respond. All the best to you for a healthy delivery!

Sure, you can try it. Semen will help your cervix ripen faster. Swallowing semen is actually more effective, if you feel so inclined. Still, don't expect your child to come this early, you may have as many as five weeks left. Who knows. Every woman and every pregnancy is different.

I have to say, though, there can't be a job in the world that would make it worth missing the birth of your child, can there?

OK, here is the medical answer, one of the hormones in ejaculation is prostaglandin. IT does ripen the cervix which means it makes it prepare for birth. It was the natural way to get things moving. They use the concentrated form called prostaglandin jelly in the hospital to move things along.. The key with it is if you want it do much you have to leave it there when you are done.. It is better if you slightly elevate your pelvis so it stays up near the cervix to do it's job.

If you want to have sex, it is perfectly safe. It won't induce labor unless your body is ready anyway. Enjoy!

37 weeks may be what doctors call "full term", but that does not necessarily mean your baby is ready to be born. It is great that your body is starting to dialate, but it doesn't necessarily tell you anything about when your labor will begin. The average of when first-time moms deliver is actually at 8 days past the "due date".

I know you want your fiance present for your birth - if you would like to induce labor, you can weigh the pros and cons of an actual medical induction which might mean your baby has to spend a few days in the NICU without a lot of time with you and making for an easier labor because it starts naturally, versus your fiance being present and having his support. That is a choice that only you can make.

Is there any way your fiance can get time off from his job to be there for you? You can look into the family medical leave act. I believe he will be protected.

Finally I would suggest hiring a doula! Of course I am biased, but a doula is a labor support professional who will provide you emotional and physical support continuous through your labor. So you do not have to be alone.

Good luck in what you decide!
