Okinawa Japan: A Place Apart

Okinawa is a prefecture in Japan. Its name means “rope in the open sea” - a phrase thought to refer to the appearance of the long chain of almost 60 islands that compose the prefecture. Okinawa Japan is considered to be a place somewhat apart from Japan proper, as its residents have their own culture and language.

Okinawa, Japan is located in southern Japan where the temperate climate is suited to swimming and enjoying the beautiful beaches year round. However, spring and summer are still the best choices for an Okinawa vacation due to the fact that September and October make up the typhoon season.

Visitors may also enjoy visiting the many untrammeled islands of Okinawa. These islands — which number about fifteen — are uninhabited and covered with wild vegetation. Adventurers may enjoy exploring these wildernesses, which are otherwise rarities in Japan. Boat trips can be arranged at any seaside town. Camping in these wilderness areas is also a popular activity for tourists.

Okinawa culture differs markedly from the rest of Japan. This is due to Okinawa’s differing history from Japan. Traditionally a separate entity from the rest of Japan, Okinawa was only in recent history annexed to Japan in the late 1800’s. Visitors to Okinawa may enjoy traditional sports (such as karate), folk music, and the unique architecture (golden lions sit atop most buildings). The food of Okinawa is also distinct with touches of Taiwanese influence. Bitter melon, pork, fried dough, and gurukun (a local Okinawan fish) are just some of the tastes prevalent on the island. Due to the American military presence, there is also a large preponderance of Western fare.

Shuri Castle and Taketomi are two examples of Okinawa attractions. They both present aspects of the culture existing before the colonial time. Scuba diving, viewing underwater ruins, and great reefs are other activity options for tourists. Get an underwater tour and view the marine life one wouldn’t find anywhere but in Okinawa.

Okinawa Japan may be known mostly for its gorgeous beaches but whether you are going to Okinawa for business or for enjoyment you can be sure that you will greatly enjoy your visit in this special place. You can sample the culture and have many things to do and many places to visit.
