Why Being A Good Reader Is Such An Essential Skill

As a parenting you want to pass your love for a great book and the pleasures reading can bring on to your kids. Being a good reader is a crucial skill that your child should master early on to become successful in almost every aspect of her live. Reading has become an essential skill that each of us has to master, but it is also a very enjoyable way to relax and spend some time curled up with a good book.

When you think about it, there really aren’t hardly any occupations out there anymore that don’t require a decent amount of reading. This includes reading training materials, manuals, notes from the boss and more. But the need to be a good reader starts long before that. Almost everything your child does in school requires a fair amount of reading. It is one of your biggest responsibilities as a parent to make sure your child’s reading abilities are where they need to be to make sure she can keep up in school.

You can start to make a difference in your child’s live very early on by reading to your baby from birth on. Even young infants enjoy listening to your voice as you read out loud.. What you read to your baby doesn’t make a difference at this point. She won’t understand the meaning of the words you are using for quite some time. She’ll gladly listen to anything from magazine articles to the novel you are currently reading.

Babies as young as 12 months old will be interested in viewing picture books with you. Choose books that contain plenty of bright illustrations. The story itself should be short, since your baby’s attention span doesn’t last more than a few minutes yet. Sharing books with your infant while the two of you snuggle together is also a great way to spend quality time together. It will of course also strengthen the bond between mother and child.

By the time your child grows into a toddler, she will be ready to enjoy longer stories. Young children particularly enjoy simple poetry and anything that rhymes at this age. It’s the perfect way for your preschooler to learn to distinguish the different sounds in our language and how they recombine to make new words. As your child learns, she will often ask you to read a favorite story several times in a row.

To develop a love for books in your child, all it takes is to spend about 15 minutes a day reading with your kids.. That’s all it takes to keep her motivated to develop good reading skills and enjoy reading on her own. Instilling a love for reading in your child is one of the best gifts you can give her.
